It’s Tuesday, it’s six o’clock, it’s time for a new video. It’s episode 5 of the Iceland summer 2023 series and today I’m driving across the Desert of Misdeeds to Egilsstaðir before spending my evening at Vök Baths.
I’ve quite enjoyed the behind-the-scenes thing, so let’s have a look at what else is going on this day.
- It should have taken around two hours to drive across the lava field but between me not driving flat-out and me stopping regularly to take photos and videos, it took nearly four hours to drive to Egilsstaðir.
- I went for a walk down to the Netto and the N1 roadhouse which are less than five minutes away to restock, sat outside my tent in the shade and actually had some lunch today.
- Then I went for my daily walk around Egilsstaðir. I lost my scrapbooking pen yesterday on the way to Askja but it turns out there’s a stationery shop in this little town in the east of Iceland and I not only replaced it, I picked up some other sizes. This makes me happy. I also got a gold highlighter, which I didn’t realise existed.
- Egilsstaðir is a very nice little town, especially on a sunny day. Maybe it’s not very exciting but it’s nice to pop in a “real” and ordinary place in Iceland as well as the spectacular sights.
- I sat out the front of the campsite on a set of benches made out of pallets to update my scrapbook, and inadvertently filled in completely the wrong day. It was really hot. Iceland being really hot is such a novelty.
- I think I got to Vök by about 5pm, which means I got home much earlier than I usually do after an evening in the hot water. Then I sat in the campsite building and used their wifi to make plans for the next couple of days – booking my kayaking trip, having made the decision to carry on south rather than turn back to the north.
Anything else? No? Ok, let’s cue the video then!
