A) I can’t believe I’m at part five of this ten-part series already! That’s halfway through! B) I can’t believe Krauma is the fifth-oldest pool! Because I’m working through Iceland’s ten geothermal pools, lagoons, spas and hot springs in age order and the fact that this is fifth when it only opened in 2017 gives you an idea of just how quickly Iceland is producing new places for tourists to sit in hot water!
I first discovered Krauma in 2016, in that I saw in the Reykjavik Grapevine that it was under construction and due to open next year. I cut it out and stuck it in my scrapbook. The next year, I camped at Kleppjárnsreykir, which is just 1.08km from Krauma and I didn’t go. Was it not open? Did I just completely miss that it was there? Did I not visit the giant hot spring on the other side of the field? No, I did go to Deidartunguhver and judging from the four photos I took, two of which were of the local farm dog that comes to make friends with every visitor, the place was nowhere near complete. Anyway, I finally got there in the summer of 2022, having looked forward to it for six years.
Fun fact: when I made this video, I lost the very last section, the one where I count up the total points and compare it to the four that have come before which meant I had to refilm the whole thing! I had the three following this finished and scheduled and ready for YouTube to let them loose on the world before I’d even refilmed this one. Moral of the story: don’t go losing pieces of your videos.
And now, let’s see how Krauma compares to the older pools, lagoons and spas!
