One of the things that went on my Budapest to-do l

One of the things that went on my Budapest to-do list very early on was the Róth Museum. Miksa Róth was a stained glass artist and mosaicist whose work appears in many an important building in Budapest and beyond and since I love stained glass, of course I went to his museum! It’s set up to show how the apartments would have been when he was living and working there which is of a lot less interest to me than the stained glass but what relatively little there was inspired me in various ways and I fell utterly in love with St Bartholomew here. He’s one of a set but far and away my favourite - look at his face! #stainedglass #rothmiksa #glassart

Now, here’s a bit of a Budapest hidden gem. Pesterzsébeti Baths is a bus ride out of the city centre, alongside the canal that breaks off the Danube just to the south and it combines a nice modern relax pool, two small outdoor thermal pools and an outdoor lane pool with a traditional-style domed dimly-lit octagonal thermal pool and (slightly radioactive!) iodine-salt bath (currently just plain thermal water because there’s a problem with the iodine-salt well) with an almost complete lack of tourists. If you want to take a thermal bath like a local, this is the place to come. #thermalbath #budapest #hotwater #pesterzsebetigyógyfürdő

Budapest has so many baths to choose from, so here’s another. Lúkacz Baths is an absolute labyrinth and has two swimming pools and a thermal pool hiding outside in banana-yellow courtyards, plus the usual assortment of dark be-domed indoor thermal hot pools, saunas and medical facilities plus a beer bath. I don’t drink beer but between the one here, at Széchenyi and in northern Iceland I’m starting to feel the pressure to try out bathing in it. #thermalbath #lukacsbath #budapest #outdoorpool

I’m not very good at trying new foods (ARFID; it

I’m not very good at trying new foods (ARFID; it’s a barrel of laughs) but I did try my first Hungarian chimney cake. It’s a long strip of pastry wound around a wooden mould and cooked right in front of you, then rolled in the topping of your choice and occasionally filled with cream or ice cream. I opted for cocoa powder and although it was delicious, it was burning hot when it was fresh, put in a plastic bag which caused epic condensation and it was far too big for me to eat probably even half of it, although I kept going back to it throughout the day. It also made my hands very sticky and chocolatey and the Castle Hill area is strangely devoid of either fountains or water pumps to wash them clean. #budapest #food #chimneycake

The Central Market Hall is a must-do for anyone vi

The Central Market Hall is a must-do for anyone visiting Budapest. Downstairs is a labyrinth of food stalls, more or less arranged in districts by what they sell - meat, cheese, pastries, vegetables and especially paprika. Upstairs, there’s a balcony around the entire building and a couple of walkways across, where you can buy any souvenir you can imagine, or a snack. But it’s a lot busier, so if you’re not souvenir shopping or getting a photo from above, you’re definitely better off staying below. Or underneath the entire building - or maybe behind it - is an Aldi, in case there was anything you couldn’t find in the market hall. #centralmarkethall #budapest #market

I watched the balloon over Szechenyi Baths for half of Saturday but I didn’t expect to go up in it - not because I didn’t want to but because I didn’t want to queue for four hours. But it turns out if you get there reasonably early, you can more or less go straight up - it was loading as I was buying my ticket and my number came up on the very next flight. They give you a number and then call it so if you’ve got to wait, you can go to the cafe or wander in the park.

Anyway, it’s good fun, good views, about 15 minutes to go up to 150m with a few minutes to take in the views and shuffle around the circular basket and I’m very glad I did it, and that I got there not too long after 10am because the queues were already forming by the time we descended. #balloonfly #budapest #balloon #viewpoint
