Because I went to Budapest on Ryanair with only a personal item for luggage, I packed all my smallest t-shirts, reasoning that in late October it would be coat weather, or at least jumper weather. Then it was warm and the little t-shirts became my outer layers. I brought the wrong trousers, which were two sizes too big and slipped down all the time, leaving me very uncomfortable and self-conscious in my own clothes all week but seeing these selfies, using a glorious autumn-gold tree as a tripod, I really don’t hate them. #budapest #margitsziget #timerselfie #autumn

Because I spent my first two days hopping between thermal baths, I didn’t actually get to see Budapest by daylight properly until my third full day. In the meantime, I’d seen the river views by purple twilight and the dark and walked a couple of kilometres home at half past midnight… and done a boat trip! I love a boat trip and in Budapest, it’s almost compulsory. Book in advance, though - the days are pretty much gone when you can turn up and buy a ticket ten minutes before departure, which takes a certain amount of spontaneity out of travel. #budapest #danube #danubeboatcruise #budapestbynight

A capital city isn’t really a capital city unless it’s got a big wheel. I discovered Budapest’s very early on but it took until my penultimate night to go for a ride on it. It reminded me that I hate the bit when the cabin swings over the top but the views are brilliant. I’d seen Budapest from above by daylight from the balloon and now I was seeing the city lights from the wheel! #budapest #viewingwheel #budapestbynight

Last morning of the trip but far from the last pictures! Hiding on peaceful Margrit-sziget is the Palatinus Baths complex. In winter, most of the many large outdoor pools are closed but I appreciated the novelty of sitting outside in the sun in November. Back inside, there’s a reasonably large thermal pool and a little hot plunge pool - I’m actually a little redder in real life than even in that picture! I immediately followed it with the cold plunge pool opposite and then ran back to the nice thermal pool to warm up and cool down simultaneously. #palatinus #budapest #thermalbath

As I walked back from the Róth Museum the long way (and in the opposite direction from home) I stumbled across a brilliant sunset at the main station, so I flew down to Parliament as fast as I could, just in time to catch these glorious colours over the Fisherman’s Bastion. #sunset #budapest #fishermansbastion

One of the things that went on my Budapest to-do list very early on was the Róth Museum. Miksa Róth was a stained glass artist and mosaicist whose work appears in many an important building in Budapest and beyond and since I love stained glass, of course I went to his museum! It’s set up to show how the apartments would have been when he was living and working there which is of a lot less interest to me than the stained glass but what relatively little there was inspired me in various ways and I fell utterly in love with St Bartholomew here. He’s one of a set but far and away my favourite - look at his face! #stainedglass #rothmiksa #glassart

Now, here’s a bit of a Budapest hidden gem. Pesterzsébeti Baths is a bus ride out of the city centre, alongside the canal that breaks off the Danube just to the south and it combines a nice modern relax pool, two small outdoor thermal pools and an outdoor lane pool with a traditional-style domed dimly-lit octagonal thermal pool and (slightly radioactive!) iodine-salt bath (currently just plain thermal water because there’s a problem with the iodine-salt well) with an almost complete lack of tourists. If you want to take a thermal bath like a local, this is the place to come. #thermalbath #budapest #hotwater #pesterzsebetigyógyfürdő

Budapest has so many baths to choose from, so here’s another. Lúkacz Baths is an absolute labyrinth and has two swimming pools and a thermal pool hiding outside in banana-yellow courtyards, plus the usual assortment of dark be-domed indoor thermal hot pools, saunas and medical facilities plus a beer bath. I don’t drink beer but between the one here, at Széchenyi and in northern Iceland I’m starting to feel the pressure to try out bathing in it. #thermalbath #lukacsbath #budapest #outdoorpool
